FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 7:00 P.M., OPERA OF THE HAMPTONS presents AN ITALIAN NIGHT.  The music of Pietro Mascagnis dynamic opera, CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, and the very beautiful SONGS OF ITALY will fill the North Fork.  Popular songs from Roma to Taormina to Sorrento, Napoli and the songs of Tosti, Verdi and Puccini are part of this fabulous performance at DUCK WALK VINEYARDS NORTH, Southold, New York.

Tenor Daniel Rodriguez, remembered well as the NYPD singing policeman from 9/11, is the star of this thrilling drama and is singing the role of Turridu.  With the encouragement of Placido Domingo, he is pursuing an operatic career, as well as singing all over the world.  We are very excited to present this remarkable tenor.   His co-star is the great international star, Spinto Soprano Cristina Fontanelli, who will sing the demanding role of Santuzza.  Baritone Gustavo Ahualli is returning to the States to sing the role of Alfio, the betrayed husband, and the beautiful Mezzo Soprano Ann Plagianos will sing the role of Lola, the femme fatale of this dramatic work.  The passion and excitement of these great actors will bring down the house.

When the composer Pietro Mascagni learned that Sonzogno, the publisher, was offering a prize for the best one act opera, he entered his composition into the competition.  Little did he know that his Cavalleria Rusticana would not only win first prize, but that the opera would attain operatic history.  Cavalleria Rusticana brought Mascagni, a 27 year old hot-blooded youth, fame, fortune and honors and recognition for the rest of his life.  The blas audience of Europe, upon hearing the virile voice of Mascagni, hailed the apparition of a master.

It is a tale of illicit love and revenge with soaring passionate music filled with all the drama and pathos of love.  Based on Giovanni Vergas tale of Sicilian life, the story unfolds as Turiddu returns home from military duty, only to find his fianc Lola, is now the wife of the teamster, Alfio.  He seeks consolation in the love of Santuzza and seduces her.  A triangle is in place and the truth creates an atmosphere of vengeance and violence.
