A Synopsis of the Plot


ACT I
Scene 1:
 

Hansel complains of hunger.

 

Gretel shows Hansel a pitcher of Milk.

 

Gretel teaches Hansel how to dances.

Hansel dances.


 Gertrude scolds Gretel  for playing all day.

Gertrude sends Hansel and Gretel to pick berries in the forest.

Gertrude cries over spelling a jug of  milk.

A happy Peter returns with food for his hungry family.


Peter tells how he sold his brooms at a wedding and bought the wonderful food.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gertrude is happy for Peter and the food he brings until she tells about

Hansel and Gretel.

Peter tells Gertrude about the witch that

lives in the forest who turns children into

 gingerbread and eats them.

Gertrude and Peter  realize that they have to go into the forest to save their loving children.



ACT II:

 

Gretel weaves a crown of wild flowers as Hansel picks the last of the wild strawberries.

As it grows darker, they become more and more frightened. They realize they cannot refill the basket, and worse, that they are lost.

They hear strange noises and believe they see shadows in the dark.

Their fears multiply as they imagine threatening things behind every tree.


The sandman sprinkles the children with sleeping dust.   

Sandman sings a lullaby.

Hansel and Gretel kneel to sing their familiar evening prayer.

Angels float around Hansel and Gretel as they sleep.



ACT III:

The Dew Fairy comes to wake the children from their slumber.

The children find a house made

 of candy and good things to eat.

The witch appears and casts a spell over them.

Hansel and Gretel shove the witch into the oven and shut the door.

The spell over the children has been broken. Peter and Gertrude find Hansel and Gretel.

The father points out the moral.

The wicked are always punished, and when we are in need, heaven comes to our aid.
